New governor of the Central Bank of Kenya: Kamau Thugge

Veteran policymaker Kamau Thugge has been appointed governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

Kamau has worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and has experience in policy review and trade policy and supported the design of the highly indebted poor countries initiative (HIPC).

In addition, Kamau has an illustrious track record, having served as mission chief to Botswana and Lesotho as well as holding various senior roles in Kenya. These include head of the Fiscal and Monetary Affairs Department at the National Treasury, economic secretary and senior economic advisor. In addition, Kamau has served as principal secretary at the National Treasury, and lately as senior advisor to the president and head of Fiscal and Budget Affairs.

From a regulatory perspective, Kamau has helped to design and implement various laws
including the Public Finance Management Act, the Commission on Revenue Allocation Act, the Independent Officers (Appointment) Act, the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Act.

His board experience spans the Central Bank of Kenya, the Monetary Policy Advisory Committee (and later the Monetary Policy Committee), the Kenya Revenue Authority and the Capital Markets Authority.

CBK’s 10th Governor holds a Bachelor’s degree from Colorado College, as well as a masters and PhD in Economics, both from Johns Hopkins University, in the United States.
